    Merry Christmas
    A Season for Reading
    December 2005

rose Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas Book Lovers

This is the month that we celebrate the birth of Jesus through our gifts of songs, donating to the needy and visiting the sick and shut in. It is a time to spread Christmas cheer to all. Why not share the gift of reading to our teens and adults who loves to read a good book? It is said by some that if we want to hide information from most people, hide it in a book. It's unfortunate that people think we don't read.

Reading by teens and adults is booming everywhere and writers are getting an opportunity to start their own companies and to sign with others. Unlike anytime that I can remember, this is something truly special. To assure that we have plenty of books to read from authors, we need to promote reading daily. It is important to start reading with your child early while he/she is still an infant. Let us adults begin to purchase books and other reading publications to help our children do better in school. Let's prove to the world that if something is hidden in a book, we are sure to find it. Let's continue to support and uplift our many authors.

    More than a Bargain

More Than A Bargain is an endearing story of first true love. Trae Brooks is the star football player and honors student. Add in his family wealth and striking good looks and the honeys are buzzing around him like flies. Regina Miles is a serious student, but she was born to dance. Her goal for her senior year is to join the college’s famous dance team. When Trae’s fellow players bet him that he can’t add aloof Regina to his list of conquests, he rises to the challenge, confident of victory. But when Regina dances her way into his heart, all he wants to do is call the bet off-- and keep her from finding out about it.

Improve your writing in 60 seconds
Deborah Sistrunk is a media and communications practitioner with more than 20 years of experience and she has worked for major news organizations.

Successful writing - whether if be for business or promoting your publication - must be concise and precise in order for you to reap rewards. Typically, you have about 30 to 60 seconds to engage your reader. If you can't capture the reader's attention immediately, expect your document to hit the "circular file," that is, the trash can. • Avoid awkward sentences. • Use active verbs. • Read your document out loud to make sure it makes sense. • Use a second set of eyes to proofread your document. Does this mean extra work and time? Absolutely! But if you're interested in selling your services, product or concept, you must give writing your best effort. Let me give you a quick example of how you can take a "sick" sentence and turn it into a "healthy" one. Here is a sentence you might find in business correspondence. Poorly written sentence: "Recognizing your desire for an improved pricing arrangement, the following is a good approximation of the existing contract with modifications to reflect the agreements we made when we held our meeting." Say what?? Let's try this again. Sentence that gets results: "We realize you want a better pricing arrangement, so we've modified the contract to reflect what we agreed to when we met." Remember this: When it comes to effective writing, less if often more.
