    Media Relations
    Staying Ahead of the Pack

Effective media relations - whether it is for promoting publications or other products - requires a multi- faceted, interdisciplinary approach. A well-crafted approach incorporates strategic media planning, marketing, community relations, and public engagement. Expert writing and editing, attention to detail and meeting deadlines are critical when producing any publication. Understanding that the media is an audience underlies successful promotional efforts. Webster defines audience as “a group of listeners or spectators: a reading, viewing, or listening public with a vested interest.” For this reason, it is important for you to succinctly convince editors and reporters that they have a vested interest in your product – to inform readers, listeners, and viewers why your publication or service is important. There are thousands of writers trying to get their publications noticed. It’s your job to identify what sets your book apart from others – to tell why your story is so compelling. Be media savvy. Develop and nurture relationships with the media, as you would with any other audience. If you work those relationships just right – the payoff is HUGE! Understanding the media culture is also important. When pitching your book to print and broadcast organizations, one size does not fit all. Tailor your media pieces to conform to the formats of radio, TV, print, and the Internet. Deborah Sistrunk is a media and communications practitioner with more than 20 years of experience under her belt. In addition to serving as a consultant (Deborah Sistrunk & Associates), she has worked for major news organizations. More info: dcsistrunk@yahoo.com or http://me diabysistrunk.blogspot.com.

    rose Mistakes Writers Make
    You are not alone

If you are a writer navigating the publishing world for the first time, you are not alone. Novice authors often experience some challenges when it comes to producing professionally designed books that are error-free. Many mistakes, if not corrected immediately or avoided altogether, could easily jeopardize a new author’s credibility and writing career. What must writers do to ensure that their work is seen in a positive light? Hire the best people to handle the varied parts of their book production. Seek people who are an expert in the field. East St. Louis nationally known artist and author Edna Patterson-Petty offers this advice: Find people whose livelihood depends on how well they do their jobs. For instance, if you are looking for an editor, don’t hire someone merely because she has good English skills or works as a teacher. Find out if this person has direct experience in editing books. Before you enter an agreement with a firm, ask if the company focuses on editorial services. Request references. Has this company edited other authors? If so, who? Ask if you may contact these authors. Then do so. Finally, remember this: You really do pay for what you get. If you want good services, you have to put your money were your words are. Following these simple guidelines will save you a lot of heartache and pain down the road. Coming up in the next issue: the importance of a great book cover.

    Backroom
    Backroom Confessions
    Don't miss out!

When Jerickca and her staff of social workers aren’t busy helping others, they spend a lot of hours in the backroom talking about sex, life, and catching up on the latest gossip. Hiding behind that backroom door are four women and one man with lives full of problems and dirty little secrets. Each of them has their own struggles and demons to exorcise. Their often-candid backroom sessions commonly cause clash, camaraderie, connivance, cheerfulness, curiosity and mass-confusion. As the lives of these office professionals intertwine, their journey together will take you on a thrilling expedition; including love, lust, embarrassment, backstabbing, infidelity, hilarity and steamy sexual encounters.
